I'll be your shotgun rider till the day I die
Beyonce, another delicious Rihanna interview, a new book added to my shortlist
Hi. I regret that it’s been over a month since the last time I sent out a newsletter. In short, work has somehow taken over my life, and I have been lucky if I fit in a workout and make myself a meal and take Frank for a walk thats longer than a spin around the block.
To counteract the stress from work, I’ve been trying to attend to the softer, simpler things in life: Summer House and Southern Charm on Bravo, album drops from Beyonce, Ariana Grande, Kacey Musgraves, and now today, Maggie Rogers (the girls keep blessing us). In a world that treats yesterday like old news, I fear I’ve missed my window for a Beyonce album review, but just know: it was like any great love—slow at first, and then all at once and continues to marinate. I honestly have like, 10 favorites, but at any time I am liable to text my friends “I’ll be your shotgun rider till the day I die,” if that tells you anything.
This newsletter is essentially a red flare to let you all know that I’m still alive, so this one will be short. But will plan to send out a longer form edition on Sunday.
A shortlist of some of the things that have moved my spirit recently:
Wellness, by Nathan Hill. I have a handful of books I consider my favorites of all time (A Little Life, When Breath Becomes Air, Thousand Splendid Suns), and the list rarely grows except for now. So unique and clever. I’ve never read anything like it. It tells the tale of a relationship in stages: the sweeping first few months of falling in love and then the reality of marriage, parenting, and simply coexisting. The author oscillates between the childhoods of each partner, which works to inform how the husband and wife show up in their marriage. A masterclass on human behavior and psychology. Plus, he somehow manages to weave in “wellness”-esque facts that seem to tap into the zeitgeist/cultural obsession with “being well” and miraculously tie it to being human and what it means to love someone. Just excellent.
Rihanna Interview Magazine Interview nothing excites me like a Rihanna interview. I frequently go back to the 2015 Vogue interview she did with Miranda July. This one delivers.
Some favorite moments:
Feed Me, a newsletter on culture through the lens of business. My favorite thing on the internet these days.
My friend Jennifer has been releasing new playlists every Friday under the name, Don’t Trust the Algorithm. If you’re like me and you’re succumbing to old age and can’t be bothered with finding new music like we did in our youth, you’ll enjoy these. She pulls new music every week. This week’s is so refreshing.
As I said, I’ll be back on Sunday with a longer form newsletter. Love you.
